AVAST - One awesome Free Security Software (Review with Avast 5 pic)

It's been two years since I first installed the AVAST antivirus. Like thousands of web users then, I used to rely on Norton and later AVG.

Then I came across an article in Digit about AVAST and decided to try that. AVG was going all time low that time, it even failed to identify common trojans, thanks to which I had to reinstall the OS two times.

Then came AVAST. I went to the site and registered. It was a cakewalk. The word "free" appeared almost all corner of the site which usually made it a tension free process. I got the 1 year registration key almost instantly in my gmail.

So started the installer and with a boot scanning option. AVAST started a boot time scan as soon as it was restarted. It found 14 different virus at one go which went unnoticed by AVG earlier.

Before the windows could start, my system was completely virus-free!!! I could figure the difference. There was no warning message of antispyware programs, no slow loading of windows and pc hangs anymore.

So I continued. The only thing that needs to be done is the user has to register every year for the software (Free).

From my last two years experience, I've seen the following positive and negative points of AVAST -

Pros -

  1. Completely free.
  2. Difference between paid and free version is absolutely minimal for home users, specially if you compare with other free anti-virus softwares available.
  3. Easy to use User Interface.
  4. Frequent updates.
  5. Skinning support (From version 5 it will not be available).
  6.  High end protection like anti-rootkit, boot time scanning feature.
  7. Compatibility with XP, Vista, Windows 7
  8. Feature to selectively stop specific services like "Mail Scanner" when and if you don't require them

Cons -

  1. Version 4 is a little bit resource hungry when compared to Norton 2010.
  2. Has a compatibility issue with Zone alarm firewall or security suite.

The drawbacks of AVAST are supposed to be fixed in the latest version of the Software which is scheduled for release in 2010. It will remove the old UI and

introduce a new User Interface as shown below -

What happens if someone asks you to make a Statue of Liberty when you are just learning how to draw an engineering drawing? What happens if while you are having trouble with writing even the simplest of C code and someone asks you to make a Windows OS?

You feel frustrated, angry and Hopeless!!

And that's exactly is my condition now. I don't know .NET but I'm supposed to code application in it that too in half the time span that it should take. Is it some kind of joke that these people play? Really being a software engineer is one of the worst job in current Indian market.

You don't get rewarded for you well doings but you definitely get busted for every mistake you make. Sometimes Even you didn't make that yourself.

Huh..can't write more today...Exhausted!!

The Confused soul.....

So finally in this rainy day, I started writing my own blog. Back in the school I read a short story named "On letter writing", which said that people have serious problem whenever they start writing letter. Their heads turn blank. I'm currently facing similar syndrome.

I mean what should I write? Whatever I'm about to write has been written by someone already. Google has given us numerous data, but has taken our ability to be surprised.

Now blog isn't a diary. So I've decided that I won't not write my daily business just to add some extra boring bytes and for the sake of writing blog, rather than I'll post whatever comes in my mind and whatever I find interesting around me.

Now let's see what I'm good at, animation? nah that's technical so strictly forbidden in this blog. Then? Oh ok let's say movies? yes... that's one of my favorite pass time. How many movies have you seen in your life Mr/Madam visitor? 100? 200? huh, I've seen 700+ movies and the list keep on increasing. In short I've wasted 2100 hrs of my life seeing some binary bytes glowing in different colors and converting into sounds in LCD display and microphone.

I'm not going to make this blog a movie review page.... nope... I may write a few later.... but a dedicated one? nah...

Ok I guess I wrote enough for an opening post. See you all later.

Ciao!!
